Summary: This guide explains why you received an email notification stating your saved card information was automatically updated. This is a standard process to ensure your saved payment method remains up-to-date, allowing you to donate easily without interruption.
Before You Begin
- This email is sent by Tithely, not by Stripe (our payment processor), although we mention Stripe in the email.
- This is a standard, automated process designed to keep your card on file current.
How the Automatic Update Works
This process does not follow traditional steps but is an automated workflow. Here is a brief overview of what happens:
- Your Bank Sends an Update: When your bank reissues your card (usually due to a new expiration date, but sometimes a new card number), they send the new card information to payment processors through a service called the Card Automatic Updater (CAU).
- Stripe Notifies Tithely: Our payment processor, Stripe, receives this automatic update from your bank and sends a secure notification (an "event") to our system.
-
Tithely Notifies You: We immediately send you the email notification to let you know this update occurred. We do this to be transparent and confirm that your payment method was legitimately updated.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
- Why did I get this email? We send this notification for your security and peace of mind. In the past, donors were concerned that their payment methods were being edited without their authorization. This email serves as confirmation that the update was a legitimate, automatic action initiated by your bank to keep your card on file current.
- Why did I receive so many update emails for the same card? This can happen if the same card was used multiple times for guest donations and saved as separate instances in the payment system. The automatic updater service updates each individual instance of that card, and our system sends a notification for each update. While this can be alarming, it is simply the system updating every record associated with that card.
- Did Stripe send this email? No. The email comes directly from the Tithely system. We mention Stripe because they are our payment partner who securely facilitates the automatic update from your bank.
