Every church that has a phenomenal launch weekend typically sees a lot more downloads of their app than they expect. However, the biggest pain point for the majority of churches is that usage of their app significantly drops after the first month.
q | Why does church app usage significantly drop after the first month?
a | Lack of new & fresh CONTENT
New & fresh content is crucial to long term success of your new church app! You could have the coolest looking app, you can promote your new app better than any other church, but if you do not have new & great content, then you will never gain long term traction with your app.
How to create irresistible content for your app:
-
Have a team of content creators - Create a team of 2-3 people that help you create new and fresh content for your app on a weekly basis. If everything falls upon one person, you will never be able to keep up with the demands for new content. Utilize the blog feature - have different staff members post a different blog post each week. It could coincide with your current sermon series.
-
Push out new content regularly! - Churches who do not put out new content on a weekly/bi-weekly basis typically see user engagement drop. This may sound harder than it actually is. New content can be any of these things.
- Sermon Notes
- Putting the Weekly Bulletin inside of your app
- Putting a blog inside of your app or small group curriculum
- Making sure your podcasts & calendars automatically sync via RSS feeds
- Switching out the images on your home menu a few times throughout the year -
Use RSS feeds to automatically pull new content - Don't make this harder than it needs to be! Pull RSS feeds for your calendar and podcasts. Having these pull over automatically creates new and fresh content each week without you having to do anything.
-
Create content that's only available inside of your app - A great way to get people to use your app is to put things inside of it that they cannot get anywhere else. A few ideas would be, a Spotify playlist with the current worship songs in rotation at your church, have it be the only place to register for an event for the first week, etc.
-
Have a balance of content for new guests & regular attenders - If your app leans heavy on visitor content, your existing members will stop using your app. On your main home screen, we recommend that you have a split of 50/50 content for new guests and regular attenders.
Creating fresh, new and irresistible content is hard work! But if you are willing to put in the time and effort to do this, you will see your church app begin to help strengthen community, connection & belonging outside of "church service hours" and isn't that what we are all striving for?
